Amarillo, Texas

Tulsa is on the old Route 66 so we started our day with a mini detour to see some of the old classic buildings. It was fun! We detoured a couple of times. The drive from Tulsa to Amarillo was long but pretty. It was strange how almost immediately after we passed over the Texas border the landscape changed. It went from green fields and trees to yellow grasslands and plains. It was the first day that I truly felt far from home. The rest of the time I kept thinking, "This could be Ontario or Quebec". But not in Texas. I could really feel that I was somewhere completely different. Then we got to Amarillo!
We didn't see much of Amarillo but we did stay at The Big Texan Motel. Which can be summed up with one word: YEEHAW! The motel is one Texan cliche after the other. It was so colourful. We also went to eat at The Big Texan Steakhouse. The restaurant was as over the top as the motel and even boasts a "free" 72 oz. steak. Yes, you read that right 72oz!!! The deal is you have to eat the whole thing in one hour along with some of the sides. Do that, and its free. It was actually featured on the television show Man vs. Food. While we were there 3 different guys attempted the steak (they made them get up on a stage and had a timer over top). None succeeded.
It was a crazy day but lots of fun. Enjoy the pics. Sorry about posting so many, but it was too fun :-)

Route 66 Donuts? How could we not?!
Funny thing: donut shops close at noon in the south.

Classic Route 66

Route 66 Museum!

Notice the landscape. This could be on the 417 between Ottawa and Montreal, right? (besides the sign )

Now THIS is different!

This was the stage that the 72 oz.steak eaters had to sit on.

Giddy up!

Our little cowboy!

Grrrrr! I'm a Grizzly!
